Southampton Wood Recycling is a social enterprise set up to help the environment and create jobs and volunteering opportunities for local people by collecting, reusing and recycling waste timber from the building industry.

To help us deal with the continuing demand for our products we wish to recruit a self-motivated, hard-working and reliable Workshop Manager, to continue to run and expand the quantity of handmade products that we are able to provide to the public and therefore increase the revenue to the core business.

The role of Workshop Manager will fulfil around 2½ days per week, and we are looking to make this a full-time position by the addition of other work in the business: To help us deal with the increase in demand for our services we wish to recruit a self-motivated, hard-working and reliable driver/general worker to join our collections team.

The enterprise is built upon a Christian ethos, and whilst you do not need to be a practising Christian to be the right person for us, it is essential that you are committed to being part of the community and be understanding and supportive of our ethos.

As a small enterprise, we all need to be versatile and be prepared to share in a multitude of tasks. The work involves a significant amount of manual labour.


Activities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Workshop
    • Producing workshop goods using reclaimed wood
    • Designing products in such a way that other people can make them, using the Considered-Profitable-Repeatable approach
    • Making products to deadlines
    • Teaching skills to volunteers
    • Organising and running workshop parties, sessions and training (to both internal and external customers)
    • Carrying out Quality Assurance processes
    • Development & maintenance of Workshop policies and practices in conjunction with H&S Manager
    • Implementation of H&S Procedures within the workshop
    • Administration of workshop budget
    • Keeping records and maintaining stocks of consumables
  • Driving
    • Making daily collections of timber/other recyclables from building sites and other organisations
    • Making daily trips to a range of disposal sites
    • Sorting, stacking and preparing timber for sale at our premises
    • Keeping the yard /storage areas in good order, clean and tidy
    • Using hand and some power tools
    • Dealing with customers and working effectively with other staff members
    • Supervising volunteers whilst out on the road
    • Helping us to provide a high standard of service to all our customers
    • Ensuring that Health & Safety standards are maintained
  • Volunteers
    • Supervising volunteers whilst in the workshop, on the road or in the yard
    • Training volunteers, as directed by Volunteer Manager or H&S Manager
    • Reporting back any volunteer issues to the Volunteer Manager
  • Retail
    • Serving customers in shop
    • Running the shop on 1 Saturday out of 4 (on a rota basis)
    • Dealing with customers and working effectively with other staff members
  • Providing a high standard of service to all our customers, both internal and external
  • Attending and inputting to staff meetings


Essential requirements:

  • A portfolio of products made with wood
  • Experience at making products from recycled materials
  • Competent with woodworking power- and hand- tools
  • Experience of working with and under Risk Assessments / Method Statements
  • The ability to supervise and work alongside staff and volunteers
  • Good time management and commitment to customer service
  • The ability to liaise with partner organisations, customers and suppliers
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • To have good interpersonal skills with a wide range of people
  • To have an understanding of the principles of Equal Opportunities for all
  • Fit, enthusiastic and self-motivated with a positive and versatile attitude
  • Willingness to work out of doors in all weathers
  • Computer skills, including use of email and Microsoft Office
  • A full, clean UK driving licence and over 25 for insurance purposes


Desirable requirements:

  • Some experience of the building trade
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Recognised qualifications in woodwork
  • Recognised qualification in Health & Safety
  • First Aid certificate
  • Experience of training or supervising volunteers
  • An interest in environmental and social issues


Reporting to:                         Company director

Hours:                                    5 days per week, plus occasional Saturday (0.75 day) working on a rota basis. Part-time alternative may also be considered.

Remuneration:                      £64.80 to £76.24 per day depending on experience

Start date:                              January 2018

Probationary period:            6 Months
